Steve Harwell, a founding member and former frontman of the renowned US rock band Smash Mouth, recognized for their chart-toppers “All Star” and “Walkin’ on the Sun,” passed away on Monday, September 4, at the age of 56, as confirmed by his agent.

Harwell, who departed from the group in 2021 due to health concerns and had been under hospice care in recent days, peacefully passed away at his residence in Boise, Idaho, “surrounded by close family and friends,” according to Smash Mouth manager Robert Hayes, as reported by Rolling Stone magazine.

Hayes disclosed that the cause of death was attributed to liver failure.

A vocalist, Steve Harwell co-founded Smash Mouth in California in 1994, alongside Kevin Coleman on drums, Greg Camp on guitar, and Paul De Lisle on bass.

The band continues to be active and is celebrated for their eclectic blend of pop, rock, ska, and punk genres.

Smash Mouth catapulted to international stardom in 1997 with their album “Fush Yu Mang” and the sensational hit “Walkin’ on the Sun.”

“‘Walkin’ on the Sun’ revolutionized the music scene,” remarked Harwell to Rolling Stone in 2019. “It changed the way people engage with music.”

“It was distinct, it was unconventional, and it was exceptional,” he reflected. “It possessed that one-of-a-kind sound we crafted. Ask anyone who’s attempted to imitate us – you simply can’t. It’s impossible.”

Two years later, their smash hit “All Star” featured on the album “Astro Lounge.” This track earned a Grammy nomination and became part of the soundtrack for the first “Shrek” movie, featuring the beloved green ogre voiced by Mike Myers.

Over the years, more than 25 cover versions of “All Star” have been recorded, underscoring its enduring popularity, and it has garnered nearly a billion streams on Spotify.

In a heartfelt statement, Robert Hayes paid tribute to Harwell, acknowledging that “Steve’s iconic voice is one of the most distinctive voices of his generation.”

With Steve Harwell as the lead vocalist, Smash Mouth sold a remarkable 10 million records globally, according to Mr. Hayes.

Starting from the 2010s, Harwell confronted various health challenges, some occurring during live performances or rehearsals. He cited heart issues as a contributing factor to his departure from the group.

“Steve lived life at full throttle, with unwavering intensity,” remarked Mr. Hayes, “shining brightly across the universe before fading away.”
