Singaporeans are in for a celestial treat on Friday, Sep 29, as the last supermoon of 2023 will illuminate the night sky. This special occurrence will coincide with the Mid-Autumn Festival, a significant celebration in the Chinese lunar calendar.
Harvest Moon: A Symbol of Tradition
The upcoming full moon, due to its proximity to the autumn equinox in the northern hemisphere, is also known as the Harvest Moon. The Science Centre Observatory explained the significance of this name, stating, “For several evenings during this period, the gibbous moon rises earlier than in other months.” A gibbous moon, which appears more than half-full but not entirely illuminated from Earth’s viewpoint, provides an abundance of moonlight early in the evening. Historically, this extra light was beneficial for farmers and crews during their summer crop harvests.
Supermoons: A Closer Look
Supermoons occur when the moon’s orbit brings it closer to Earth, causing it to appear both larger and brighter in our sky. 2023 has already witnessed three supermoons: the Buck Moon in July, followed by the Sturgeon Moon and the Blue Moon in August.
The Science Centre Observatory provided timings for the best viewing experience, noting that the Harvest Moon will start its ascent from the east at around 7 pm and will be at a significant height by 9 pm. “Open public areas like the Marina Barrage, East Coast Park, and the Southern Ridges offer an unobstructed and potentially elevated view of the Harvest Moon with panoramic views of the city skyline,” the observatory suggested.
A Celestial Bonus
For those keen on stargazing, there’s more to look forward to. Alongside the Harvest Moon, planets Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury will also be visible, as reported by Space.com.
Awaiting the Next Supermoon
While 2023 has been generous with four consecutive supermoons, enthusiasts will have to wait almost a year for the next one. The subsequent supermoon, also termed a Harvest Moon, is slated for Sep 18, 2024, according to data from Time and Date.
So, for those in Singapore, remember to mark your calendars and find a perfect spot to witness this celestial spectacle!
