Changi Airport has unveiled the newly renovated northern wing of Terminal 2 (T2) after 3½ years of extensive engineering and expansion. The terminal, now boasting an additional 15,500 sq m of space, is set to be fully operational by the end of October, with a phased opening of stores and restaurants in the coming weeks.

Key Highlights:

  • Airlines Moving In: Singapore Airlines (SIA) has initiated flights to South-east Asia, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka from the revamped terminal. Other airlines, including Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, Air Japan, All Nippon Airways, Etihad Airways, and IndiGo, will soon follow. By October, the number of airlines operating from T2 will increase from 12 to 16.
  • Enhanced Facilities: SIA’s first-class check-in and the Sats premier check-in lounge are now open. The lounge is equipped to serve up to 20 passengers simultaneously, expecting a daily footfall of 250 to 300 passengers.
  • Increased Capacity: With the reopening of the northern wing, Changi Airport’s annual capacity is projected to rise to 90 million passengers. Specifically, T2’s capacity will increase from 23 million to 28 million passengers annually.
  • Traffic Update: As of August, passenger traffic at the airport reached 87% of pre-Covid-19 levels.
  • T2’s History: T2 was temporarily closed in May 2020 due to the pandemic-induced drop in passenger numbers. The southern wing began its phased reopening in 2022, recording over 8.7 million passenger movements since May.
  • Innovative Features: The renovated T2 departure hall now features a Fast (Fast and Seamless Travel) zone, equipped with more automated check-in kiosks and bag-drop machines. The terminal’s immigration halls have been expanded, introducing automated special assistance lanes for wheelchair users and families with children.
  • Efficiency Upgrades: T2 has undergone significant system and equipment upgrades, including a new chiller plant that operates at 30% lower energy consumption levels. The baggage claim hall has been expanded, and the baggage-handling system now offers enhanced security features and a fully automated early luggage storage system.

Changi Airport Group (CAG) emphasized that these new features and upgrades are aimed at significantly enhancing labour productivity and providing passengers with a seamless travel experience.
