Singapore’s Teong Tzen Wei made waves at the 2023 Asian Games, clinching the nation’s first swimming medal with a silver in the men’s 50m butterfly. This achievement also marks Teong’s debut medal at the Asian Games.
The 25-year-old swimmer completed the race in 23.34s, narrowly beating Kazakh competitor Adilbek Mussin, who finished at 23.44s. The gold medal was secured by South Korea’s Baek Inchul with a time of 23.29s. Notably, the standing Asian record for this event is 22.93s, established by Singapore’s Joseph Schooling in 2017.
Reflecting on the previous Asian Games in 2018, the Singapore swim team had an impressive haul of six medals, with two golds achieved by Schooling.
Earlier in the day, Teong showcased his prowess by finishing second in the heats with a time of 22.47s. His teammate, Mikkel Lee, who made it to the final with the sixth-fastest time, secured the 7th position in the final, clocking in at 23.60s.
Teong’s performance at the SEA Games earlier this year saw him narrowly miss the gold in the same event to Lee. In the 50m freestyle event, he was outpaced by fellow Singaporean, Jonathan Tan.
This silver medal serves as a testament to Teong’s dedication and skill, solidifying his position as one of Singapore’s top swimmers.
