In light of escalating regional tensions, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has strongly advised Singaporeans to reconsider any planned travels to Lebanon. The advisory, released on Wednesday (Oct 18), goes further, suggesting that those currently in the country should prioritize leaving at the earliest via available commercial routes.
The MFA’s advisory not only warns against travel to Lebanon but underscores the importance of remaining vigilant for those who decide to stay. It advises Singaporeans in Lebanon to closely monitor local developments, adhere to guidance from the Lebanese authorities, and particularly avoid the volatile Lebanon-Israel border areas.
Additionally, large gatherings and protest zones, given their unpredictability, should be avoided for personal safety.
Concerns Extend to Israel and Palestinian Territories
This travel caution isn’t the first of its kind in recent days. As early as Oct 10, the MFA had similarly advised Singaporeans in Israel and the Palestinian Territories to evacuate the region. With emphasized caution, the ministry had earlier highlighted areas to avoid, which included the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and border regions between Israel and its neighbouring states of Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Syria.
Sudden Escalation of Hostilities
The origins of the recent advisory trace back to the abrupt large-scale attack launched by the militant group, Hamas, on Israel on Oct 7. Described as the most significant in half a century, the surprise onslaught resulted in over 1,000 fatalities. Israel’s subsequent retaliatory air strikes on Gaza escalated the death toll, with numbers surpassing 3,000 in Gaza alone.
The hostilities peaked recently with a particularly grievous strike on a Gaza hospital, marking it as the most devastating single event during this ongoing conflict. The Palestinian authorities and the Israeli military have since been embroiled in a blame game over the responsibility for this tragic incident.
Further complicating the situation are the clashes erupting along the Israel-Lebanon border, the most deadly since the 2006 conflict between Israel and the Shiite militant group, Hezbollah.
Singapore’s Stance on the Conflict
Singapore has openly condemned the violent attacks by Palestinian militants on Israel, urging all parties involved to prioritize peace and put an immediate end to the ongoing bloodshed.
MFA’s Appeal to Singaporeans
For effective communication in emergent situations, the MFA strongly recommends Singaporeans to e-register with the ministry. This proactive step ensures the ministry can establish timely contact if and when necessary.
In conclusion, the escalating tensions in the Middle East have prompted nations worldwide to issue advisories and take precautionary steps. The current situation underscores the importance of international dialogue and diplomacy in resolving conflicts and ensuring global peace.
