Surge in Passenger Traffic for Singapore Airlines and Scoot in October 2023

Singapore Airlines (SIA) and its low-cost counterpart, Scoot, experienced a substantial increase in passenger traffic in October 2023. The airlines collectively carried 3.09 million passengers, marking a 36.1% increase compared to the same period last year. This figure also represents a slight increase from the three million passengers recorded in July. The year-on-year growth in passenger traffic, which stood at 24.5%, surpassed the capacity expansion of 23.0%. As a result, the passenger load factor (PLF) rose by 1.0 percentage point from the previous year, reaching 87.4%​​.

Operational Changes and Future Plans

During this period, SIA ceased its operations to Vancouver, while Scoot resumed its services to Kunming. Looking ahead, SIA has announced plans to launch non-stop flights from Singapore to Brussels in 2024 and ramp up flights to various destinations, including Tokyo, Shanghai, and Kuala Lumpur. Additionally, Singapore Airlines was named the world’s best airline in the 2023 Skytrax awards​​.

Cargo Operations and Network Coverage

The cargo operations of the SIA Group also saw a positive trend, posting a load factor of 56.1%, a 3.5 percentage point increase year-on-year. This improvement was primarily supported by e-commerce flows and freighter charters, with cargo loads rising by 7.0% year-on-year, outstripping the capacity expansion of 0.3%. As of October 2023, the SIA Group’s passenger network covered 119 destinations in 35 countries and territories, with SIA serving 74 destinations and Scoot serving 68. The cargo network included 121 destinations across 37 countries and territories​​.

This uptrend in passenger and cargo traffic reflects the ongoing recovery of the aviation sector and the robust demand for air travel post-pandemic, positioning Singapore Airlines and Scoot favorably in the global aviation market.
