Hyundai Motor Group has officially launched a state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility in Singapore, marking a significant advancement in automotive technology and production.

The Facility

The Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) spans seven floors and is capable of producing up to 30,000 electric vehicles annually. This highly automated plant has been operational since early this year, manufacturing Ioniq 5 cars and fully autonomous robotaxis. The Ioniq 6 is set to join the production line in 2024.

Innovative Production Method

A notable feature of the 86,900-square meter facility is its cell-based production system. This system, where humans and robots collaborate, replaces traditional conveyor-belt manufacturing methods. Around 200 robots are involved in assembly and inspection processes, allowing human workers to focus on more creative tasks.

Additional Features

The facility also boasts a 618-meter rooftop track for test driving and a smart farm where robots assist in vegetable production. These vegetables will be used in a restaurant planned to open next year. This initiative aligns with Singapore’s goal to produce 30% of its food locally by 2030, considering that it currently imports 90% of its consumed food.

Global Expansion Plans

Hyundai Motor Group, which includes brands like Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Corp., and the luxury Genesis brand, plans to produce over 3.6 million EVs annually by the end of this decade. In line with this goal, the group is constructing larger factories in Ulsan, South Korea, and Georgia, USA, with significant annual production capacities.

Hyundai’s new facility in Singapore represents a leap forward in automotive manufacturing, showcasing how technology can revolutionize production processes. This move not only bolsters Hyundai’s position in the EV market but also contributes to Singapore’s innovation and sustainability goals.
