Electric Bus Deployment: Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) plans to deploy a total of 360 electric buses on the roads starting from December 2024. This initiative is part of Singapore’s efforts to transition to cleaner energy vehicles.
Contract Details
Large-Scale Contracts: LTA has awarded its first large-scale contracts for these new electric buses, including the supporting charging systems. The contracts involve the purchase of 240 electric three-door single-deck buses from BYD (Singapore) Pte. Ltd and 120 from Cycle & Carriage Automotive Pte. Limited.
Bus Features: These buses will be equipped with modern amenities like a passenger information display system, a CCTV-collision warning system, a driver anti-fatigue system, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
Infrastructure Development
Charging Infrastructure: New charging infrastructure will be installed in bus depots at Sengkang West, East Coast, and Gali Batu to support these electric buses. Contracts for building these systems have been awarded to Busways Pte Ltd/Shell Singapore Pte Ltd Consortium and Presico Engineering Pte Ltd.
Future Plans and Goals
Transition to Cleaner Energy: LTA aims for half of Singapore’s bus fleet to be electric by 2030 and is committed to having a fleet comprised entirely of cleaner energy vehicles by 2040. Further tenders for electric buses and necessary infrastructure upgrades are expected in the coming years to support this transition.
Conclusion
This move towards electric buses is a significant step in Singapore’s journey towards sustainable and environmentally friendly public transportation. The deployment of these buses is expected to contribute to quieter traffic and enhance the commuter experience, aligning with Singapore’s broader environmental goals.
