While public libraries worldwide are grappling with reduced visitorship and funding issues, Singapore’s libraries are experiencing a contrasting trend. Not only are they witnessing an increase in visitors, but there are also continuous efforts to rejuvenate and expand existing libraries. This includes the recent opening of the five-storey Punggol Regional Library in April 2023 and plans to launch the Children’s Biodiversity Library in January next year.

National Library Board’s Expansive Network and Innovations

The National Library Board (NLB) manages a network of 28 libraries, including the newly opened Punggol Regional Library. Despite the closure of library@esplanade, efforts are underway to enhance other libraries like Bukit Batok Public Library, which is set to double in size. The NLB’s proactive approach to revitalizing libraries, like the upcoming revamp of the Queenstown Public Library, showcases its commitment to improving library infrastructure.

Rising Visitorship and Adaptation to Digital Demands

As of August 2023, 78% of Singapore residents had visited NLB’s libraries and archives, a notable increase from 61.7% in 2022. The total visits in 2022 amounted to 16.5 million across the NLB’s network, marking a significant 43.5% increase from 2021. This surge in visitorship underscores the NLB’s success in adapting to the digital age, with initiatives like a mobile application for efficient book searches and managing loans.

Libraries as Hubs of Learning and Digital Access

Public libraries in Singapore have effectively adapted to users’ evolving needs in the digital era. They offer digital access to invaluable content, including Singapore’s heritage resources, and have become key spaces for learning and reading. The NLB’s approach reflects a broader vision of libraries as dynamic community spaces that cater to a range of learning styles and needs.
