In a significant development in the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) and Sengkang Town Council (SKTC) legal battle, the Court of Appeal has ordered the two town councils to pay a combined total of about S$388,800 in costs and disbursements. This decision comes after the Workers’ Party (WP) leaders and other town councillors successfully appealed several findings of the trial court.
Breakdown of the Ordered Payments
AHTC is required to pay S$176,241.11, and SKTC must pay S$212,543.52 for different appeals. These payments are specifically for the costs and disbursements related to the appeals in which the WP leaders and councillors had substantial success.
Ongoing Liabilities and Responsibilities
Despite the successful appeal, the WP leaders remain liable for negligence in allowing control issues in SKTC’s payment system. Sylvia Lim and Low Thia Khiang are also liable for similar issues in AHTC, with Ms. Lim facing an additional charge of negligence for awarding a contract to a more expensive vendor.
Next Steps in the Case
The Court of Appeal noted that costs for the actual trial have not yet been settled and will be decided after damages have been assessed. This ongoing case continues to be a significant matter in Singapore’s legal and political landscape.
