An Indonesian man named Nordin was sentenced to one year in jail and five strokes of the cane for illegally entering Singapore. On December 4, 2023, he was convicted of two charges under the Immigration Act. This was not Nordin’s first attempt to illegally enter the country, as he had been found guilty of similar offenses between 2015 and 2019.

Details of the Incident

Nordin, 36, drove a speedboat from Batam, Indonesia, and landed near Tanah Merah Coast Road in Singapore in the early hours of November 20, 2023. After landing, he fled on foot into a nearby forested area. The Police Coast Guard spotted his boat as it entered Singapore waters around 11:50 pm on November 19 and conducted a search in the Tanah Merah Coast Road area.

Nordin was arrested at 7:30 am on November 20. At the time of his arrest, he did not possess any identification documents or a valid pass to enter Singapore. Given his history of being previously expelled from Singapore and not being allowed to re-enter without permission from immigration authorities, he faced a minimum jail term of one year. In sentencing, District Judge Janet Wang noted Nordin’s status as a repeat offender and the need for his punishment to reflect an escalation in his criminal behavior, while also acknowledging his guilty plea and immediate arrest following his illegal entry.
