Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that Singapore plans to significantly expand its pool of artificial intelligence (AI) experts. The ambitious goal is to increase the number of AI professionals, including machine-learning scientists and engineers, to 15,000. This initiative is a key part of Singapore’s national AI strategy.

Government Incentives and Partnerships

To support this expansion, the Singaporean government has pledged to increase incentives for the AI sector. This includes backing accelerator programs for AI startups and encouraging companies to establish AI “centres of excellence.” Additionally, efforts are being made to secure access to high-performance computing resources through partnerships with chipmakers and cloud service providers.

Local Training and Global Collaboration

Authorities are focusing on ramping up local AI training programs and providing graphics processing units (GPUs) for the country’s researchers. In line with this, Singapore has also launched a $52.3 million initiative to develop Southeast Asia’s first large language model, catering to the region’s languages.

This comprehensive approach demonstrates Singapore’s commitment to becoming a global leader in AI technology and innovation.
