The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced substantial completion of work on seven stations along Stage 4 of the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), with plans to transfer these stations to SMRT in early 2024. This development marks a significant milestone in enhancing MRT access in Singapore’s eastern region.

Substantial Completion of Stage 4

LTA revealed that the construction and development of seven stations on TEL Stage 4 are nearly finished. These stations include Tanjong Rhu, Katong Park, Tanjong Katong, Marine Parade, Marine Terrace, Siglap, and Bayshore. The completion of these stations brings Singapore’s eastern residents closer to direct MRT connectivity, promising a boost in convenience and accessibility.

SMRT to Conduct Further Testing

Once LTA hands over these stations to SMRT, the rail operator will undertake comprehensive testing procedures before the line is officially opened for passenger services. The length of these testing processes depends on various factors, including the number of new stations. LTA anticipates that SMRT will require a few months to familiarize its staff with the new stations, conduct operational and maintenance training, and prepare for incident management.

Expected Duration for Testing

Industry insiders suggest that train testing typically ranges from three to six months to complete. This period is crucial to ensure the safety and efficiency of the new line before it becomes operational. The upcoming testing phase is a critical step in the journey towards the full integration of TEL Stage 4 into Singapore’s robust public transportation network.

The completion and subsequent operationalization of TEL Stage 4 represent a significant leap forward in Singapore’s public transport infrastructure, particularly for those residing in the east. The new line is poised to offer enhanced connectivity and travel convenience, further strengthening Singapore’s commitment to developing a world-class public transportation system.
