In January 2024, Singapore’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) did not participate in the latest military strikes against Yemen’s Houthi rebels. This clarification came after the United States military carried out strikes on the Houthi rebels in response to their threats against shipping in the Red Sea.
While Singapore is not involved in direct military action, it is contributing personnel to Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG) under the Combined Maritime Forces’ Combined Task Force 153: Red Sea. This multinational initiative focuses on protecting shipping vessels against security threats through information sharing and maritime patrols.
Singapore’s Role in Regional Security
Singapore’s involvement in OPG includes deploying a team of planners to work with international partners at their headquarters, formulating plans for maritime security. Additionally, a team from the Republic of Singapore Navy’s Information Fusion Centre will support information sharing with the commercial shipping community. Singapore will also send a senior national representative to the Combined Maritime Forces in Bahrain.
The Context of Regional Tensions
The increased regional tensions, including the Houthi attacks on international maritime traffic in the Red Sea, are seen as an act of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza following the Israel-Gaza war. Singapore’s contribution to OPG highlights its commitment to regional stability and the safety of crucial international shipping lanes.
