The Ministry of Education in Singapore has declared significant salary increments for personnel in Special Education (SPED) schools. This adjustment includes a raise of up to 12% for SPED teachers and up to 15% for teacher aides. The new salary structure will be gradually introduced from 2024 to 2026, with the government augmenting its financial support to facilitate these changes.

Enhanced Starting Salaries

In addition to the general pay rise, the starting salaries for SPED teachers will see an uplift of up to 15%, with teacher aides experiencing up to a 17% increase starting this year. By 2026, the monthly remuneration for SPED teachers is projected to range between S$3,000 to over S$7,000, and for teacher aides, from S$2,000 to more than S$4,000.

Qualification and Training

To qualify as a SPED teacher, individuals must possess at least A-Levels or a diploma. Those lacking special education training are required to complete a stint at a SPED school followed by a government-funded diploma program in special education. Post this training, the starting salary for SPED teachers, before undertaking the special education diploma, will be enhanced to up to S$3,600. Teacher aides, who are not mandated to undergo the diploma program, will have their starting salary increased to up to S$2,100.

This initiative underscores Singapore’s commitment to bolstering the quality and effectiveness of special education by ensuring that educators and support staff are adequately compensated for their specialized skills and dedication.
