In a significant move to enhance the commuting experience, about 290 escalators across 32 MRT stations on the North-South, East-West, and North East lines are set for a comprehensive refurbishment starting 2026. The Land Transport Authority announced this initiative, aiming for completion by 2032, to introduce advanced features including variable speed operation to adapt to peak and non-peak hours. This follows a successful $47.3 million upgrade by SMRT of 231 escalators, completed over a six-year period ending in 2022.
