Space One, a Tokyo-based aerospace company, experienced a significant setback when its Kairos rocket exploded shortly after liftoff. The incident occurred during the company’s inaugural launch attempt from Wakayama, aiming to establish a foothold in Japan’s burgeoning commercial space launch sector.
Launch Aborted Amidst Flames
The 18-meter Kairos rocket, carrying a governmental test satellite, had barely left the launch pad in western Japan when it was engulfed in flames, causing an immediate termination of the flight. Space One, in a public statement, confirmed the abrupt end to the mission and disclosed that an investigation into the mishap’s specifics is underway.
Repeated Delays and High Hopes Dashed
The launch, named after the ancient Greek term for seizing the opportune moment, sought to deliver the satellite into orbit approximately 51 minutes post-launch. However, persistent parts shortages and technical difficulties had previously forced Space One to delay the Kairos rocket launch on five occasions, including a recent postponement last Saturday.
