In a significant crackdown on illegal narcotics, Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) arrested 64 individuals in a sweeping islandwide operation conducted from March 18 to 22. Among the apprehended were several teenagers, with the youngest being a 17-year-old student, highlighting the concerning involvement of youths in drug-related activities.
A Youthful Concern
The operation’s spotlight fell on a Sengkang flat at Compassvale Walk, where four teenagers were taken into custody on the morning of March 18. A search of the premises led to the discovery of about 16 grams of Ice (methamphetamine), a digital weighing scale, numerous empty plastic packets, and other paraphernalia typically associated with drug distribution, all found within the bedroom of an 18-year-old suspect.
Widespread Raids
The crackdown spanned several neighborhoods, including Ang Mo Kio, Woodlands, and Yishun. A notable arrest occurred along Yishun Avenue 2, where CNB officers intercepted a car, detaining its 40-year-old driver and a 32-year-old passenger. The vehicle contained a significant haul of narcotics, including approximately 1kg each of cannabis and Ice, among other substances.
Subsequent searches at the suspects’ residences in Sembawang Close and Woodlands Street 81 unearthed additional drugs, including nearly 1.5kg of cannabis and 19 bottles of liquid suspected to contain GHB, a drug often associated with recreational use and potential misuse.
A Sobering Reminder
The operation, yielding drugs valued at approximately S$555,000 (US$411,000), serves as a sobering reminder of the persistent drug menace and its reach among Singapore’s youth. The CNB’s relentless efforts to curb drug trafficking and usage underscore the importance of vigilance and community cooperation in safeguarding the well-being of the nation’s younger generation.
