Denmark’s esteemed old stock exchange building, Børsen, located in the heart of Copenhagen, was consumed by a massive fire early Tuesday. The historic 17th-century structure, renowned for its dragon spire, tragically saw the spire collapse onto the street amidst the blaze, shocking onlookers.

Cultural Heritage Lost

Jakob Engel-Schmidt, Denmark’s Culture Minister, expressed profound sorrow over the incident, remarking that 400 years of Danish cultural heritage were lost to the flames. The fire’s intensity led to urgent efforts by members of the public who braved the smoke and flames to save historic paintings and artifacts within the building.

Efforts to Control the Fire

Firefighters faced challenges controlling the fire, exacerbated by the scaffolding and protective plastic covering due to ongoing renovations. It took several hours before they could bring the situation under control. The proximity of the Børsen to the Danish parliament and the Christiansborg castle prompted evacuations and the closure of nearby areas due to smoke.

Commitment to Rebuild

The Børsen, which houses the Danish Chamber of Commerce, suffered extensive damage with reports suggesting that up to half of the building had been destroyed. Brian Mikkelsen, the director of the Chamber of Commerce, vowed that the historic building would be rebuilt “no matter what”. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but it has significantly hindered the emergency response due to the complexity introduced by the scaffolding.

This devastating event has not only damaged a significant architectural landmark but has also impacted the heart of Denmark’s cultural legacy, prompting a national reflection on the preservation and restoration of historical sites.
