The Gulf states of the UAE and Oman are currently grappling with severe weather conditions, resulting in flash floods that have claimed 20 lives and significantly disrupted operations at Dubai International Airport, the world’s second-busiest air hub. The airport has been facing “very challenging conditions,” with runways overwhelmed by water, leading to substantial flight disruptions.

Devastation Across Two Countries

In the UAE, intense rainfall—the most significant recorded in the past 75 years—has caused widespread flooding, affecting roads and infrastructure. North of Dubai, a tragic incident occurred when a man’s car was swept away by the sudden floods, leading to his death.

Oman has also suffered greatly, with 19 deaths reported since Sunday. Among the victims was a young girl found in Saham, a stark reminder of the storm’s severity. Rescue efforts continue as the community reels from the impact of the storm.

Impact on Air Travel

Dubai International Airport, a crucial transit point for global travelers, has seen over 270 flights canceled and 370 delayed as of Wednesday, according to Flight Aware. The airport has issued advisories urging passengers to avoid traveling to the airport amid the ongoing emergency, and recovery efforts are expected to extend over several days.

Ongoing Weather Threats

Authorities have issued warnings of more thunderstorms and strong winds, suggesting that the situation may worsen before it improves. Many areas, particularly low-lying ones, remain submerged, and the forecast indicates no immediate respite from the harsh weather conditions.

The storms have not only caused immediate disruptions but are also a sobering reminder of the increasing severity and frequency of extreme weather events, calling for enhanced preparedness and response strategies in the affected regions.
