Singapore has launched the final Invincible-class submarine, marking a significant milestone in the Republic’s submarine journey. The Inimitable is the last of four Type 218SG submarines commissioned by the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) to be built by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) since 2013.

Launch Ceremony in Kiel

The 70-meter-long submarine was launched at the TKMS shipyard in the German port city of Kiel on April 22. The ceremony was officiated by Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius also attended the event, underscoring the international significance of the occasion.

End of an Era and New Capabilities

The completion of the Inimitable signifies the culmination of a decade-long effort to modernize Singapore’s submarine fleet. The Invincible-class submarines represent a significant upgrade over the older Challenger and Archer classes. These new submarines are designed for longer endurance, greater stealth, and enhanced operational capabilities, providing the RSN with advanced underwater warfare technology.

Strengthening Defence Partnerships

The launch ceremony in Germany reflects the strong defence partnership between Singapore and Germany. It also signals the continued commitment of both countries to enhancing their military capabilities and cooperation. As Singapore takes delivery of its final Invincible-class submarine, the Republic reinforces its strategic position in the region and its ability to respond to emerging security challenges.
