An Iranian rapper, Toomaj Salehi, has been sentenced to death for supporting anti-government protests, according to his lawyer. The rapper became a vocal supporter of the 2022 protests that erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman who died in police custody, allegedly for wearing an “improper” hijab.

One of Salehi’s lawyers, Amir Raesian, confirmed that his client was issued a death sentence and is preparing to appeal against the ruling. The Iranian authorities have not yet commented on the sentencing.

Mr. Salehi was first arrested in October 2022 after publicly supporting the protests through his songs. In July 2023, he was sentenced to six years and three months in prison, avoiding a death sentence due to a Supreme Court ruling. However, in January 2024, the Revolutionary Court in Isfahan accused him of new charges in addition to those he had previously been acquitted of.

History of Opposition and Arrests

Prior to the 2022 protests, Toomaj Salehi was already known for his outspoken criticism of the Iranian regime. He was banned from performing in concerts and instead used social media to share his music, often criticizing the leadership for corruption and the suppression of dissent.

Following his initial prison sentence, Salehi was released on bail in November 2023, but he was rearrested shortly after. The new charges stem from a video message he posted, claiming he had been tortured and pressured by intelligence ministry agents.

Implications and Message

The death sentence appears to be a message from the Iranian regime, signalling their intent to suppress dissent and uphold strict Islamic laws. The verdict has come amid a crackdown on Islamist dress code violations and an increased police presence on the streets to enforce these codes.

Toomaj Salehi’s lawyers have 20 days to file an appeal against the death sentence. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with many advocating for human rights and freedom of expression in Iran.
