Changi Airport in Singapore has recorded a remarkable recovery in passenger traffic, with numbers in the first quarter of 2024 exceeding pre-pandemic levels. A total of 16.5 million passengers passed through Changi in the first quarter, with traffic in each month surpassing figures from 2019.
January to March Passenger Movements
In January, the airport handled 5.43 million passengers, followed by 5.35 million in February, and 5.73 million in March. These numbers represent a 96 per cent increase in January, 104.3 per cent in February, and 101.7 per cent in March compared to the same months in 2019, according to Changi Airport Group (CAG).
Total Aircraft Movements
Aircraft movements reached a total of 89,400 during the first quarter, which is 94 per cent of the movements seen in the same period in 2019. The total number of passenger movements in Q1 2024 exceeded the first quarter of 2019 by 0.5 per cent.
Top Markets and Boosted Travel
Changi’s top five markets for this quarter were China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, and Thailand. China took the lead due to a mutual 30-day visa exemption arrangement with Singapore, contributing significantly to the increased travel between the two countries.
Denpasar (Bali), Manila, Taipei, Seoul, and Shanghai were among the top 10 cities that outperformed their 2019 first-quarter numbers by more than 10 per cent. The impressive recovery in passenger traffic suggests that travel and tourism are rebounding strongly, signalling a positive outlook for the airport and its stakeholders.
