Heavy rains caused by El Niño have led to devastating floods and landslides in Tanzania, resulting in at least 155 deaths, according to Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa. The severe weather conditions have caused widespread destruction and displacement.

Deaths and Injuries

Prime Minister Majaliwa reported that 155 people have died and 236 have been injured due to the floods and landslides. The heavy rains have caused significant loss of life and damage across the country.

Large-Scale Displacement

Approximately 200,000 people and more than 51,000 households have been affected by the disaster. The floods have caused many families to evacuate from flood-prone areas. The prime minister urged those in affected regions to take precautions and move to safer locations if necessary.

Infrastructure Damage

The prime minister noted that the severe weather has also caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and railways. Additionally, crops and other forms of property have been destroyed, leading to further disruptions in the daily lives of those affected.

Ongoing Crisis

The heavy rains, which have also affected neighbouring Kenya and Burundi, have created a regional humanitarian crisis. Prime Minister Majaliwa warned that the rains might continue into May, increasing the risk of additional flooding and landslides. He urged people to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety in the coming weeks.
