Tesla CEO Elon Musk made an unexpected trip to Beijing on Sunday, engaging in high-level discussions with Chinese officials. This visit centers on the implementation of Tesla’s full self-driving (FSD) software and the potential approval for the transfer of data overseas.

Meeting with Premier Li Qiang

During his stay, Musk met with China’s Premier, Li Qiang. State media highlighted this encounter as a symbol of the robust economic and trade relationships between the US and China. Premier Li remarked on Tesla’s operations in China as a testament to successful collaboration between the two nations.

Focus on Autonomous Driving Software

Tesla introduced its FSD technology, the most advanced version of its Autopilot system, four years ago. However, the software has not yet been released in China, Tesla’s second-largest market, despite significant demand from its customers there. Musk’s discussions likely focus on securing permissions that would allow Tesla to offer this innovative technology to Chinese consumers.

Data Transfer Discussions

A crucial aspect of Musk’s visit is the negotiation over data transfer. Tesla hopes to get the green light to move data collected by its vehicles in China to the US. This data is essential for training the algorithms that power its autonomous driving technologies. Since 2021, in compliance with Chinese regulations, all data collected from Tesla’s Chinese fleet has been stored locally in Shanghai without being transferred abroad.

Rival Competition

The visit also comes at a time when Chinese automakers like Xpeng are making strides in autonomous technology, aiming to overtake Tesla in this key area of innovation. Musk’s efforts to fast-track FSD deployment and data transfer approvals are seen as strategic moves to maintain Tesla’s competitive edge in the rapidly evolving automotive sector.
