The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) is considering equipping referees with body cameras as a measure to protect them from increasing instances of abuse during matches. This consideration comes in response to the disturbing trend observed in the disciplinary cases handled last year, where a significant majority involved verbal or physical abuse towards match officials.
Statistical Alarm
Out of the 14 disciplinary cases reviewed by the FAS last year, 10 were directly related to either verbal abuse or violent conduct aimed at referees. This alarming statistic has prompted the FAS to look into innovative solutions to safeguard the referees’ well-being and maintain the integrity of the sport.
Educational and Preventative Measures
Alongside technological aids, the FAS is intensifying its educational campaigns. These are aimed at club officials, coaches, players, and referees, stressing the importance of respect and sportsmanship in football. The association believes that education is key to preventing abuse and ensuring that football remains a safe and enjoyable sport for everyone involved.
