Australia’s newest budget airline, Bonza, has entered voluntary administration, leaving thousands of passengers stranded as all flights were abruptly cancelled on Tuesday. The airline, which commenced operations just last year, was the first new carrier to launch in Australia since 2007.

Fleet Repossession and Financial Struggles

Local media reports indicate that Bonza’s fleet of eight Boeing 737 Max planes were repossessed by creditors on the same day the flights were cancelled, although the airline has yet to confirm these claims. This sudden move has exacerbated the disruption caused to passengers across the country.

Company Statement

Bonza issued a statement expressing regret over the impact on its customers and highlighted its efforts to find a resolution. “We apologise to our customers who are impacted by this and we’re working as quickly as possible to determine a way forward that ensures there is ongoing competition in the Australian aviation market,” the statement read.

This development has raised concerns about the future of competition in Australia’s aviation sector, as Bonza had been a significant player since its inception.
