Singapore Offers Aid and Condolences to Papua New Guinea Following Devastating Landslide

In a heartfelt expression of solidarity, Singapore has extended its condolences to Papua New Guinea following the catastrophic landslide that occurred on May 24. The tragedy, which struck a village in the Enga province, is feared to have claimed the lives of over 2,000 people, burying them under massive debris and soil. Singapore’s Foreign Minister reached out to his counterpart in Papua New Guinea, Justin Tkatchenko, to convey the nation’s sympathy and support during this difficult time.

Financial Aid for Relief Efforts

Understanding the immense scale of the disaster and the urgent need for assistance, the Singaporean Government has pledged a significant contribution towards the relief efforts. Through the Singapore Red Cross (SRC), the government will donate US$50,000 (approximately S$67,500). This funding is aimed at supporting the ongoing recovery operations, helping to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the landslide.

The landslide’s impact has been profound, with six bodies recovered so far and thousands feared dead. The United Nations, updating on the situation as of May 28, reported that approximately 7,849 people have been affected. These individuals are in dire need of aid, including possible evacuation and relocation to safer areas.
