Groundbreaking Lunar Achievement
China’s uncrewed spacecraft, Chang’e 6, has successfully landed on the far side of the Moon, a monumental achievement in space exploration. This event marks a significant milestone as the far side of the Moon remains largely unexplored due to its complex terrain and communication challenges.
Mission Details
The China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced that the Chang’e 6 touched down in the South Pole-Aitken Basin at 06:23 Beijing time on Sunday. This area is noted for its extensive and deep crater that may contain some of the Moon’s oldest rocks, offering invaluable insights into its history and geology. The mission, which was launched on May 3, aims to collect rock and soil samples to bring back to Earth for detailed analysis.
Technological Innovations
One of the critical components of the Chang’e 6 mission’s success was its autonomous navigation system. During the spacecraft’s descent, an onboard visual obstacle avoidance system autonomously detected potential hazards. Using a visible light camera, the system assessed the lunar surface’s brightness and darkness, allowing the lander to select a safe area for touchdown.
China’s Continued Lunar Exploration
This successful landing builds on the achievements of the Chang’e 4 mission, which made history in 2019 by landing on the Moon’s far side for the first time.
