Four individuals, including a pregnant woman, lost their lives when a vehicle in the convoy transporting the body of the late Malawi Vice-President Saulos Chilima struck mourners. The incident occurred on Sunday night, according to police reports.
Injuries and Immediate Response
In addition to the fatalities, twelve people were injured and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital. The tragic event followed clashes between locals, police, and soldiers escorting the vice-president’s funeral convoy from the capital, Lilongwe, to his home village for burial.
Circumstances Leading to the Accident
Mr. Chilima, who died in a plane crash a week prior, was being transported to his home district of Ntcheu, located approximately 180 km (112 miles) south of Lilongwe. Thousands of people had lined the streets to pay their respects as the coffin made its journey on Sunday.
Escalation and Collision
As the procession neared Mr. Chilima’s home, tensions escalated, with some locals throwing stones at government vehicles and officials. Amid the chaos, one vehicle veered off the road and struck a group of mourners, resulting in four deaths, according to a police statement.

Mr. Chilima is scheduled to be buried later on Monday in Ntcheu. The incident has cast a shadow over the proceedings, highlighting the heightened emotions and unrest surrounding the funeral.
