Efforts to clean up Singapore’s largest oil spill have made substantial progress, with beaches in southern waters and East Coast Park largely cleared of oil.
Southern Islands Cleared
Authorities announced on June 20 that beaches on St John’s, Lazarus, and Kusu islands have been successfully cleared of oily sand. This update was part of a joint statement detailing the ongoing cleanup operation.
Pasir Panjang Terminal and Sentosa
The northern part of Pasir Panjang Terminal, where the spill occurred on June 14, has also been cleared of oil slicks.
The incident happened when a Netherlands-flagged dredging boat collided with a Singapore-flagged bunker vessel, resulting in 400 tonnes of fuel leaking into the sea. Additionally, oil deposits have been removed from most parts of Siloso Beach on Sentosa.
East Coast Park and Tanah Merah
Significant cleanup efforts have also been completed at the beaches of East Coast Park and Tanah Merah. These areas have been mostly cleared of oil, restoring them closer to their natural state.
Ongoing Efforts
Cleanup operations continue at Sentosa’s Palawan and Tanjong beaches.
