In response to the recent oil spill in Singapore, which released approximately 400 tonnes of fuel into the sea, Johor state officials have commenced coastal clean-up operations. The spill has impacted several beaches in Johor, prompting immediate action from the local authorities.

Clean-Up Efforts and Patrols

Coastal clean-up efforts began on the morning of Friday, June 21, at Sungai Rengit and Teluk Ramunia beaches. Additionally, Johor has activated coastal patrols and monitoring activities in the Kota Tinggi district to assess and manage the oil pollution effectively.

Affected Areas

Sungai Rengit and Pengerang, located to the east of Changi in Singapore, are tens of kilometres from affected areas such as East Coast Park and the beaches of Tanah Merah. The spread of oil pollution to these areas in Johor highlights the transboundary impact of the spill, necessitating coordinated efforts for effective clean-up and mitigation.

Ongoing Monitoring

State officials in Johor are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the clean-up is thorough and that further spread of the oil is prevented. These measures aim to protect local marine life and restore the cleanliness of the coastal areas.
