Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi, who was sentenced to death for supporting anti-government protests, has had his death sentence overturned by the Supreme Court. His lawyer, Amir Raesian, announced that the Supreme Court has ordered a retrial.

Arrest and Initial Sentencing

Salehi was arrested in October 2022 after publicly supporting protests across Iran. Initially sentenced to six years and three months in prison in July 2023, the Supreme Court later ruled that this sentence violated Iran’s multiple-offences rules and was excessively harsh.

New Charges and Death Sentence

In January, the Revolutionary Court in Isfahan charged Salehi with new offenses. By April, he was sentenced to death for the capital offense of “corruption on earth.” Additionally, he was found guilty of assisting in sedition, calling for riots, collusion, and propaganda against the state.

Resentencing Ordered

The Supreme Court’s decision has sent Salehi’s case back to court for resentencing, providing a glimmer of hope for the young musician.

Bold Criticism Through Music

Known for his fearless criticism of Iran’s leaders, Salehi’s lyrics and songs have condemned the government’s corruption and crackdowns on dissent. His bold stance has made him a significant figure in the ongoing struggle for freedom of expression in Iran.
