Singapore Bags Two Gold Medals at ‘Olympics of Vocational Skills’

Singapore has claimed two prestigious gold medals at the WorldSkills international competition, often referred to as the “Olympics of vocational skills.” The competition, held in Lyon, France, from September 10 to 15, saw participants from around the world showcase their skills across various trades and industries.

Victoria Cheong Wins Singapore’s First Gold in Visual Merchandising

Nineteen-year-old Victoria Cheong, a third-year student from Nanyang Polytechnic, made history by winning Singapore’s first gold medal in the visual merchandising category. Over four days, Cheong impressed judges by creating eye-catching visual displays for the windows and interiors of shops and department stores, aimed at maximizing sales.

Werrill Wong Shines in Freight Forwarding

Joining Cheong on the podium was Werrill Wong, a 19-year-old student from Temasek Polytechnic, who won gold in the freight-forwarding category. Wong emerged victorious among four competitors, showcasing her expertise in managing the logistical aspects of international trade.

Singapore’s Impressive Medal Haul

In addition to the two gold medals, Singapore’s delegation earned four silver medals, two bronze medals, and 11 medallions of excellence. The medallions are awarded to competitors who score 700 points or more but do not secure a place on the podium.

China and South Korea Lead the Medal Table

Overall, China dominated the competition with 49 medals, including 36 golds, while South Korea finished in second place, winning 10 gold medals among a total of 32 medals. Singapore’s strong showing at the event highlights the Republic’s dedication to vocational excellence on the global stage.
