Singapore Launches New Agency to Address Online Harms and Support Victims

A newly established Singapore government agency aims to swiftly tackle online harms such as cyberbullying and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images. This initiative will offer victims a faster alternative to the traditional court-based processes, helping to stop harmful actions more effectively.

Victims Can Seek Direct Redress Through Agency

Victims will now be able to submit applications to the agency, which will have the authority to order perpetrators and social media platforms to halt harmful online activities. This includes actions such as removing damaging content and preventing further harm from occurring online.

Swift and Effective Relief for Victims of Online Harm

During a speech at the launch of the Smart Nation 2.0 initiative at the Punggol Digital District on October 1, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the need for timely support for victims. “All victims of online harm want the damaging content to be removed quickly and permanently,” he said, noting that existing legal and criminal processes can be slow, while the new agency will provide faster relief.

A Step Forward in Protecting Victims of Online Abuse

This new government body reflects Singapore’s commitment to addressing the growing issue of online abuse and supporting victims in a more timely and effective manner. The agency’s ability to directly intervene aims to provide a crucial layer of protection in today’s digital landscape.
