North Korean Defector Crashes Stolen Bus in Failed Attempt to Return Home

A North Korean defector living in South Korea has been detained after crashing a stolen bus into a barricade near the heavily militarized border in an attempt to return to his home country. The man, who defected to South Korea in 2011, tried to drive through the Tongil Bridge near the demilitarized zone (DMZ) on Tuesday but was stopped by soldiers after ramming the bus into the barricade.

Desperate Attempt to Cross the Border

The defector, who works as a construction worker in South Korea, reportedly ignored warnings from soldiers as he attempted to cross into North Korea. He had been living under difficult economic conditions and missed his family still residing in the North, according to a police investigator.

Charges Pending for Theft and Security Violation

The police are considering charging the man, who is in his 30s, with theft and violating national security laws. Crossings from South Korea to North Korea are exceedingly rare, as most defectors typically move in the opposite direction. However, many North Korean defectors face challenges adapting to life in the South, contributing to cases like this.
