The typhoon, which hit Kaohsiung at around 12:40 p.m. local time, brought winds of nearly 100 mph, tearing roofs off buildings, toppling trees, and scattering shipping containers at ports. The storm had hovered off Taiwan’s southwestern coast for days before making landfall, causing significant damage as it weakened to a category one typhoon.

Amid the chaos, a fire at a hospital just kilometers from Krathon’s landfall site claimed the lives of nine people on Thursday morning. Though the fire is not believed to be directly linked to the typhoon, the severe weather complicated evacuation efforts as authorities worked to save hundreds of patients from the burning building.
