Precautionary Measures Taken After Oil Leak from Shell Pipeline

Singapore authorities have deployed containment booms at key areas, including Marina Barrage, Sentosa, East Coast Park, and West Coast Park, following an oil leak from a Shell pipeline on Sunday, October 20. The National Environment Agency (NEA) has issued a precautionary advisory, urging the public to avoid swimming and other primary contact water activities at East Coast Park, Kusu Island, St John’s Island, and Lazarus Island.

Precautionary Measures to Protect Beaches and Desalination Plants

As part of the preventive measures, NEA has warned beachgoers to steer clear of water activities until further notice. Additionally, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) is closely monitoring seawater intake at the Marina East and Jurong Island Desalination Plants. As of the morning of October 21, no oil has been detected near these facilities, and water quality readings remain normal, ensuring that plant operations are not disrupted.

Source of the Oil Leak

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) reported being alerted to the oil leakage at around 1pm on Sunday. The leak originated from a Shell land-based pipeline between Bukom Island and Bukom Kecil, prompting an immediate response to contain the environmental impact.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring public safety and environmental protection amid ongoing containment efforts.
