Background of ‘Aisake Valu Eke
‘Aisake Valu Eke is a seasoned politician with a background in finance and public administration. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 2010 and served as Minister of Finance from 2014 to 2017. Eke holds a PhD from the University of Southern Queensland, where his research focused on service quality in Tonga’s public sector.
Predecessor’s Resignation
Former Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni resigned on December 9, 2024, ahead of a scheduled vote of no confidence initiated by Eke and other Members of Parliament. His resignation was unprecedented in Tonga’s political history and led to the expedited election of a new leader.
