On January 20, 2025, Chinese authorities executed 62-year-old Fan Weiqiu, who was convicted of killing 35 people in a deliberate car attack in Zhuhai, Guangdong province. The incident, which occurred on November 11, 2024, stands as one of the deadliest attacks in China in recent years.

The Zhuhai Car Attack

Fan Weiqiu, reportedly distressed over his recent divorce settlement, drove his SUV into a crowd of people exercising outside the Zhuhai Stadium sports center. The attack resulted in 35 fatalities and left 43 others injured. Following the rampage, Fan attempted suicide by self-inflicted knife wounds but was apprehended and hospitalized.

The Zhuhai Intermediate People’s Court found Fan guilty of “endangering public safety by dangerous means,” citing the particularly cruel nature of his actions and the severe social harm caused. He was sentenced to death on December 27, 2024, and the execution was carried out after approval by the Supreme People’s Court.

Rise of ‘Revenge on Society’ Crimes

Fan’s attack is part of a troubling trend in China, referred to as “revenge on society” crimes, where individuals commit acts of mass violence due to personal grievances. In a similar case, 21-year-old Xu Jiajin was executed on the same day for a stabbing spree at his former university in Wuxi, which resulted in eight deaths and 17 injuries. Xu’s actions were reportedly motivated by academic failures and job dissatisfaction.

Government Response

In response to these incidents, President Xi Jinping has urged local governments to implement preventive measures to address the root causes of such attacks. The Chinese government has intensified security and imposed harsh penalties, including the death penalty, to deter further acts of mass violence.

The execution of Fan Weiqiu underscores China’s stringent approach to addressing mass attacks and reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining social stability amid rising societal tensions. These incidents have also sparked discussions about the need for improved mental health resources and social services to prevent future tragedies.
