China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, is scheduled to visit the United Kingdom in mid-February 2025 to engage in discussions with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy. This visit marks the first UK-China strategic dialogue since 2018 and signifies a potential warming of relations between the two nations.
Revival of Strategic Dialogue
The primary objective of Wang Yi’s visit is to revive the UK-China strategic dialogue, which has been dormant for several years. The last such dialogue occurred in 2018 between Wang and then-Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt. The resumption of these high-level talks indicates a mutual interest in addressing shared concerns and exploring avenues for cooperation.
Timing Amid Sensitive Developments
The visit is set against a backdrop of sensitive political developments. Notably, a local inquiry is scheduled for February 11 regarding China’s proposal to construct a “super-embassy” at Royal Mint Court in East London. The initial planning application was rejected by the local council in 2022 due to security concerns and resident opposition. However, following the Labour Party’s ascent to power in July 2024, the proposal has gained support from key officials, including Lammy and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. The Metropolitan Police have also withdrawn their previous objections.
Recent High-Level Engagements
This upcoming visit follows a series of high-level engagements between the UK and China. In October 2024, David Lammy visited Beijing, where he met with Wang Yi to discuss bilateral relations. Additionally, Chancellor Rachel Reeves traveled to Beijing and Shanghai earlier this month to resume the UK-China economic and financial dialogue, emphasizing the importance of confident engagement and identifying areas of national interest for cooperation.
Wang Yi’s planned visit to the UK represents a significant step in reestablishing and strengthening diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. As both nations navigate complex political landscapes, the revival of strategic dialogues underscores a shared commitment to addressing mutual concerns and exploring collaborative opportunities.
