A Historic First: Dalí’s Art Graces Indian Shores

For the first time, India is hosting an exhibition of Salvador Dalí’s artworks, offering art enthusiasts a rare opportunity to experience the surrealist master’s creations firsthand. The exhibition, titled “Dali Comes to India,” is organized by the Bruno Art Group and is being held at the Visual Arts Gallery in the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, from February 7 to 13, 2025.

Exhibition Highlights: A Glimpse into Dalí’s World

Curated by Christine Argillet, the daughter of Dalí’s longtime publisher and confidant, the exhibition features over 200 paintings and artworks. Visitors can explore a diverse collection that includes iconic pieces, lesser-known works, and rare prints, providing a comprehensive insight into Dalí’s artistic journey and his fascination with India.

Dalí’s Connection to India: A Surreal Anecdote

Dalí’s association with India dates back to a unique incident in 1967 when Air India commissioned him to design an ashtray. In return, Dalí requested a baby elephant as payment. The airline obliged, and the baby elephant was shipped from Bangalore to Geneva before being presented to Dalí in Spain. This anecdote underscores the artist’s eccentricity and his whimsical connection to India.

The “Dali Comes to India” exhibition is a landmark event, marking the first time Dalí’s works are being showcased in the country. Art lovers and cultural enthusiasts are encouraged to visit the Visual Arts Gallery at the India Habitat Centre to immerse themselves in the surreal and imaginative world of Salvador Dalí.
