For the first time, India is hosting a comprehensive exhibition of Salvador Dalí’s works, offering art enthusiasts a rare opportunity to experience the surrealist master’s creations firsthand. Titled “Dalí Comes to India,” the exhibition features over 200 original pieces, including etchings, watercolors, and tapestries from the esteemed Pierre Argillet Collection.

Exhibition Details

The exhibition is being held at the Visual Art Gallery, India Habitat Centre in New Delhi, from February 7 to 13, 2025. Following this, it will move to Masarrat Gallery by Bruno Art Group from February 15 to March 16, 2025.

Highlights of the Collection

Curated by Christine Argillet, daughter of Dalí’s longtime collaborator Pierre Argillet, the collection offers a deep dive into Dalí’s surreal world. Notable works on display include:

  • Mythologie (1963-65): A series of etchings where Dalí explores various mythological themes.
  • Les Chants de Maldoror (1934): Intricate etchings illustrating the poetic novel “The Songs of Maldoror.”

These pieces showcase Dalí’s fascination with mythology, literature, and the subconscious, reflecting his unique ability to blend reality with dreamlike imagery.

Dalí’s Connection to India

Although Dalí never visited India, he was deeply intrigued by its rich spiritual traditions. In 1970, inspired by photographs taken during Pierre Argillet’s travels to India, Dalí created a series of etchings that drew parallels between Western fascination with Indian spirituality and the counterculture movements of the time.

A Cultural Milestone

“Dalí Comes to India” not only celebrates the legacy of a surrealist icon but also marks a significant moment in India’s evolving art scene. The exhibition has garnered attention from collectors, critics, and art enthusiasts, fostering a deeper appreciation for surrealism within the country. Interactive sessions, guided tours, and discussions are being organized to enrich the visitor experience, making this event a landmark cultural occasion.

The arrival of Salvador Dalí’s masterpieces in India offers a unique opportunity for art lovers to engage with the works of one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. “Dalí Comes to India” provides an immersive journey into the surreal, inviting visitors to explore the depths of Dalí’s imagination and his enduring impact on the art world.
