On May 1, 2025, a devastating multi-vehicle collision occurred at a toll plaza on the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) in Tarlac City, north of Manila, Philippines. A speeding passenger bus crashed into several vehicles queued at the toll gate, resulting in at least 10 fatalities, including four children, and injuring more than 30 others.

Collision Details

The incident took place around midday during the Labor Day holiday, a peak travel period. The bus, operated by Solid North Bus Transit Inc., slammed into a van waiting at the toll booth. The impact caused a chain reaction, pushing the van into a compact SUV, which then collided with a tractor head and another SUV ahead.

Among the deceased were eight individuals from the van and two from the compact SUV. A couple traveling in the SUV perished, while their baby survived the crash. Many of the injured were passengers on the bus.

The bus driver, who sustained injuries, was taken into custody. He admitted to investigators that he had fallen asleep at the wheel shortly before the collision. Authorities are considering charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides.

Government Response

In response to the tragedy, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon ordered the immediate suspension of Solid North Bus Transit Inc.’s operations pending a thorough investigation. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is expected to enforce the suspension.

Broader Implications

This incident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety in the Philippines, where vehicular accidents are often attributed to poor enforcement of traffic regulations, driver fatigue, and vehicle maintenance issues. The government has pledged to implement stricter safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
