Xiaomi, primarily known for its stronghold in the smartphone market, is venturing into new territory with the launch of its inaugural electric vehicle (EV), the Speed Ultra 7 (SU7). Set to begin taking orders this Thursday, Xiaomi is making a bold entrance into the EV space.

A Competitive Price Point

Under the leadership of CEO Lei Jun, Xiaomi has positioned the SU7 at a competitive price, just below 500,000 yuan ($69,186; £54,836). This strategic pricing pits Xiaomi against established EV giants such as Tesla and BYD, signaling a new chapter for the technology conglomerate.

Xiaomi’s EV Strategy

Amid a global slowdown in EV sales growth and an emerging price war, Xiaomi aims to differentiate the SU7 by integrating it with the same operating system used in its smartphones, laptops, and other devices. This synergy is anticipated to resonate with Xiaomi’s loyal customer base, offering a seamless ecosystem of connected devices.

Production Partnership

The manufacturing of the SU7 will be undertaken by a subsidiary of the state-owned BAIC Group, at a facility in Beijing with an annual production capacity of up to 200,000 units. This collaboration underscores Xiaomi’s commitment to its EV venture.

Xiaomi’s move into the electric car industry highlights the evolving landscape of technology firms exploring automotive ventures. This comes in the wake of reports last month suggesting that Apple, another tech giant, had shelved its EV project, illustrating the complexities and challenges in the transition from consumer electronics to automotive manufacturing.
