In response to an unprecedented number of bear attacks in Japan, where six people were killed and over 200 were injured in the past year, the government is set to trial a pioneering AI bear-warning system. The increase in attacks is attributed to bears venturing into human-populated areas due to a shortage of their natural food sources.
Pilot Program in Toyama Prefecture
The pilot program will be launched in Toyama Prefecture, located in central Japan. This area will utilize AI technology to analyze live feeds from various cameras, including those managed by the government, municipalities, and private entities. The system is designed to detect bear activities and promptly dispatch alerts to local authorities, police, and hunters.
Potential Nationwide Implementation
The AI system will not only send instant warnings but will also analyze the movement patterns of the bears to predict their possible future locations. Should this pilot prove effective, plans are in place to expand the AI bear-warning system to other regions of Japan that are also experiencing significant bear activity. This proactive approach aims to reduce the risk of bear-human encounters and enhance safety for both the local communities and the bears.
