Eight crew members from the ship that collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore have finally returned home after being stranded on the vessel for three months. On Monday, the Dali departed Baltimore’s port with only four of the original 21 crew members remaining on board.
Journey to Norfolk
The 289-meter Dali was assisted by four tugboats as it set off for Norfolk, Virginia, on Monday morning. The journey is expected to take between 16 and 20 hours.
Aftermath of the Crash
The collision on March 26 resulted in the deaths of six repair workers on the bridge. Following the crash, approximately 50,000 tonnes of wreckage needed to be cleared before the Port of Baltimore shipping channel could fully reopen in June. The Dali was relocated to port during this period.
Crew’s Ordeal
The original crew, most of whom are Indian nationals, were unable to leave the ship as they were considered witnesses to the incident. Additionally, they lacked valid visas or shore passes to enter the United States, leaving them stranded on the vessel until their return home could be arranged.
