Taiwan has called on Beijing to release a Taiwanese fishing boat that was seized by the Chinese coast guard and taken to a port in mainland China.
Seizure Details
The fishing boat, Dajinman 88, was intercepted by two Chinese vessels late on Tuesday near the Kinmen archipelago. This archipelago, located a short distance from China’s coast, is controlled by Taiwan.
Response from Taiwanese Authorities
The Taiwanese coast guard dispatched two patrol vessels to rescue the Dajinman 88. However, they were blocked by Chinese boats and instructed not to interfere. To avoid escalating the conflict, the Taiwanese vessels called off the pursuit.
Status of Crew
During a news conference on Wednesday, Taiwanese coast guard officials confirmed that the boat had two Taiwanese and three Indonesian crew members on board. The vessel was taken to the port of Weitou in China. Taiwan continues to demand the safe return of both the fishing boat and its crew.
