In a significant milestone for both heritage preservation and religious tradition, the revered Crown of Thorns has been ceremoniously returned to Paris’s Notre-Dame Cathedral. This event marks a poignant chapter in the cathedral’s restoration following the catastrophic fire in 2019.

Historic Relic’s Journey Back to Notre-Dame

The Crown of Thorns, venerated by many Christians as the headpiece placed on Jesus Christ during his crucifixion, was reintroduced to Notre-Dame in a solemn ceremony led by Archbishop Laurent Ulrich. The relic, a circular band of rushes encased in a crystal and gold tube, had been safeguarded since its dramatic rescue during the 2019 blaze that ravaged the 850-year-old cathedral.

A Relic with Deep Historical Roots

Acquired by King Louis IX of France in 1239 from Constantinople, the Crown of Thorns was initially housed at Sainte-Chapelle before being transferred to Notre-Dame’s treasury in 1806. During the 2019 fire, firefighters and police officers formed a human chain to save this and other priceless artifacts, ensuring their preservation amidst the disaster.

Public Veneration and New Reliquary

Following its return, the Crown of Thorns will be available for public veneration every Friday from January 10 until April 18, 2025, and subsequently on a monthly basis. It has been placed in a newly crafted reliquary, replacing the one from 1806, to honor its significance and ensure its protection.

Notre-Dame’s Restoration Milestone

The return of the Crown of Thorns coincides with the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral, which had been closed for extensive restoration since the fire. The reopening ceremony, attended by dignitaries including French President Emmanuel Macron, marked a triumphant moment in the cathedral’s history, symbolizing resilience and renewal.

The reinstallation of the Crown of Thorns not only restores a vital piece of religious heritage to its rightful place but also signifies the enduring spirit of Notre-Dame and its significance to both Paris and the global community.
