An indefinite curfew has been imposed in parts of Nagpur, Maharashtra, after violent clashes erupted between Hindu and Muslim groups over demands to demolish the tomb of 17th-century Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The unrest has resulted in injuries to over 30 police personnel and several civilians, prompting authorities to take stringent measures to restore order.

Origins of the Conflict

The violence began on March 17, 2025, when members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal staged a demonstration in Nagpur, demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb located in Khuldabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. During the protest, participants burned an effigy of Aurangzeb, which led to rumors that religious texts, including the Quran, had been desecrated. These rumors incited anger among local Muslim communities, escalating tensions and leading to clashes.

Escalation and Response

Following the spread of rumors, groups of individuals gathered unlawfully, pelting stones at police and damaging property. The violence resulted in injuries to at least 34 police officers and five civilians, with several houses and vehicles damaged. In response, authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in affected areas, including Kotwali, Ganeshpet, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpavli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imamwada, Yashodharanagar, and Kapilnagar police jurisdictions.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the violence, stating that the incident appeared to be premeditated. He assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible, emphasizing the importance of maintaining law and order.

Historical and Cultural Context

Aurangzeb, who ruled from 1658 to 1707, is a contentious figure in Indian history. Hindu nationalist groups accuse him of persecuting Hindus during his reign, though some historians argue that these accounts may be exaggerated. The recent release of the Bollywood film “Chhaava,” depicting a Hindu warrior’s resistance against Aurangzeb, has further inflamed sentiments, contributing to the current unrest.

Current Situation

As of March 19, 2025, the curfew remains in effect, with heightened security measures in place across Nagpur. Authorities have detained over 50 individuals in connection with the violence and are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation.

The incident underscores the persistent religious and cultural tensions in India, highlighting the challenges in reconciling historical narratives with contemporary societal dynamics.
